FORMER Arenel Movers head coach, who had shifted to the team manager’s post, Kudzai Mhandire, has quit the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League club.

Mhandire joined Arenel as head coach in 2021, where he turned the club’s fortunes around, leading them to a third-place finish in 2022 and promotion from the Zifa Southern Region Division One League in 2023.

He was reassigned as team manager, with Farai Tawachera taking over as the gaffer as the former is not qualified to work in the topflight league as coach.

Mhandire resigned on Monday indicating that it was a difficult decision for him to make, given the long history he has shared with the club.

“At this present stage, it’s the best decision for me and the club,” he said.

“I have been with the team for quite a while now, and we have enjoyed a lot of successes. I have stuck with the club through the most difficult times and brought the best out of the players, but sadly, there comes a time when you realise that the working environment is no longer conducive to achieving set goals.”

Arenel Movers have been struggling financially, which has translated to poor performance on the field.

They are currently second from the bottom with 11 points from 14 matches, with only one win, eight draws, and five losses.

Mhandire emphasised the need for a functional system to achieve success.

“For a system to be functional, there has to be co-ordination. Football is big. Football has its own fundamentals that should be followed to the letter,” he said.

“Failure to have a functional system will result in system failure, hence the need for me to protect my image and that of the club.”

Mhandire, who won the 2023 Southern Region Division One Coach of the Year award, is reportedly being pursued by several clubs in the southern and central regions.

Arenel Movers face third-placed Simba Bhora on Saturday at Wadzanai Stadium.
