THE best of the best from the 2012 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) season will be crowned tonight, with Dynamos coach Kalisto Pasuwa likely to be rewarded for the Coach of the Year award after completing another league and cup double. SPORTS EDITOR
He missed out to Hwange’s Tennant Chilumba last year despite winning the league and cup double after taking over at Dynamos in mid-season, but after a stellar season, he finally looks set for the crown.
Highlanders’ Kelvin Kaindu, whose side finished second on goal difference, is also in the running.
Goalkeeper of the Year award will be taken by Highlanders and Warriors number one Arial Sibanda, who conceded 14 goals from the 29 he played this season. This award is calculated based on the highest number of games against the conceded.
Dynamos’ George Chigova played 18 and conceded eight after taking over from outgoing Soccer Star of the Year Washington Arubi, who now plays for Pretoria University.
Nelson Mazivisa, the former Shabanie Mine striker now back at FC Platinum, will take home the Golden Boot Award after banging in 18 goals while the best Under-20 player this season will also be rewarded although most of the players’ ages remain highly suspicious.
For the referee of the year, there was “better” noise from the clubs this season, probably because none of Dynamos, Highlanders, Caps United or FC Platinum were affected by bad match officiating.
The trend in Zimbabwe is that if it’s the so-called small teams complaining, then there is usually no case. Kwekwe-based Munyaradzi Majoni, Hardly Ndazi and Batsirayi Muchenje performed far better than anybody else.

After everything has been said and done, Denver Mukamba, Masimba Mambare and Ronald Chitiyo will then battle for the 2012 Footballer of the Year. This award has generated interest and controversy, to those who like to create it, but may the best player be crowned.
Kennedy Ndebele, the PSL chief executive officer, said all was in place for the awards night.
“We are looking forward to a memorable night that would be an icing on the cake at the end of the season. We hope the winners chosen will know that they are now ambassadors for football and not for their clubs,” he said.
“The interesting part is that those that win awards usually attract the interest from foreign clubs and this is a great chance for the top three to move abroad.”
