BY RICHARD ZIMUNYA At least seven participants from Zambia are expected to take part at this year’s annual Mineva Zimbabwe Open Chess tournament which kicks off tomorrow in Harare
The four-day tournament will end on Monday.
Mineva Zimbabwe Open is the flagship of Zimbabwe Chess Federation and will see more than 200 competing.
Participants will battle for honours in the Open, the Ladies and Development categories.
In an interview with Newsday Sport yesterday, Zimbabwe Chess Federation president, Collen Tongoona said they were expecting a high turnout.
“We are expecting up to 300 participants because on Easter open we had 220,” Tongoona said

“Mineva Zim open is one of the biggest tournaments on our calendar. We are very excited and ready to host such a tournament. We are expecting more foreigners this time to attend.
Seven participants, all from Zambia have confirmed their attendance which is a good thing for us,” he said.
The tournament organisers have set aside a budget of US$6 000 for prizes.
“We will finalise the specific amount for each winner (today),” he said.
The tournament comes two weeks after the federation hosted Easter Open Chess tournament which saw Valentine Pasipanodya and Spencer Masango crowned champions in the women and men’s categories, respectively.
