Nyatsime College is set to host an invitational fundraising golf day to mobilise funds to build an office and lecture room as well as staff quarters at the institution’s driving school along Seke Road in Chitungwiza.
The golf event is scheduled to take place at Zimbabwe Republic Police Golf Club in Harare on August 3, 2024.
Nyatsime College’s vision of a driving school started in 2015 and has been on its strategic plan ever since.
The college has a stand situated at Seke Township, now Makoni Shopping Centre, and as such a certified University graduate Driving School Instructor who is part of the teaching staff was recruited for this purpose.
“Road carnage is real. We are raising funds to build an office and lecture room at Nyatsime College Driving School, along Seke Road in Chitungwiza. Help us bring sanity to the roads by supporting this worthy cause and making a dream come true to the founder’s vision, the late Professor Stanlake Samkange of witnessing Nyatsime College offering technical/vocational as well as commercial education which was not taught in African schools, to equip the African child with life skills,” Convenor of the tournament Evelyn Maisvoreva, who is also board member at the college said.
“In 2018, 12 students passed their provisional licenses when the school started. Post COVID-19 we are resuscitating the dream. A certified University graduate Driving School Instructor was hired for this purpose. It is the dream of the College to produce a student who will be ready to enter the tertiary education phase with a valid driver’s license. Approved plans for the Driving School are available and the ground for practical lessons too. The students will receive practical lessons on the petty technical issues that are faced by drivers such as oil checks, filling tyre pressure, removal and replacement of wheels in the event of a puncture.
“The driving school is part of the founder’s vision; that of witnessing Nyatsime College offering technical/vocational as well as commercial education which was not taught in African schools, to equip the African child with life skills. Our total budget for the whole project is USD$129 151.95. The Invitational Fundraising Golf Day will not be exhaustive in funding all our events but will complement work in progress, this opportunity will allow you to pledge sponsorship towards specific activities of the project,” Maisvoreva added.
Nyatsime College was founded on August 11, 1960 by the late Professor Stanlake Samkange who was a man of multiple talents: a teacher, educationist, historian, journalist, novelist, church patron and director of companies.
As an educationist, he founded Nyatsime College to give the disadvantaged black majority commercial, economic and vocational education which was being a preserve for the advantaged first- and second-class citizens during the colonial period.
The College was a do-it-yourself project inspired by Booker T. Washington’s book entitled “Up from Slavery” while he was at Adams College in South Africa.
Establishment of Nyatsime College was the first adventure by an African.
The format is betterball stableford and registration is US$50 for an individual and US$200 for a 4-Ball.
