TSHOLOTSHO North legislator Libion Sibanda is appealing for funding for the construction of schools in his constituency, where children are forced to walk long distance to access education.

In an interview with Southern Eye yesterday, Sibanda bemoaned the shortage of schools in his constituency in Matabeleland North province.

He said the constituency was constructing schools using resources provided by the community and locals based in the diaspora.

“We are, however, having some shortages of materials, so we are appealing to well-wishers to donate so that the projects can be completed,” the legislator said.

Sibanda said they were constructing four schools to reduce the distance learners walked to school which discouraged children from attending classes.

“We are constructing two primaries schools which are Madziba and Mabhengula.

“The other two are secondary schools Mtshayeli and Mbiriya, which is meant to improve our education sector since most children will attain education,” he said.

Sibanda underscored the need to complete the schools so that the children in the area access similar education to that in urban set-ups.

“We have worked with organisations like Campfire, which helped in the construction of some schools which has brought development within our constituency as this has made education accessible to villagers,” he said.

“We should work hard as legislators for the development of rural areas and make sure they attain all necessary facilities to improve people's lives.”
