BULAWAYO commuters and motorists have expressed concern that non-functioning traffic lights at the intersection of Khami Road and Basch Street just outside the central business district (CBD) are the major cause of traffic congestion in the city.
Most commuter omnibus operators said the intersection was a death trap with the traffic lights having not been functioning for more than two weeks.
Bulawayo United Passengers Transport Association director of operations, Morgan Msipha, said as transport operators within the city they had raised the issue with the city council.
“It is the council that is responsible for that so we have left the issue in their hands,” he said.
On the issue of council’s introduction of left turns at intersections, Msipha said the move improved the flow of traffic within the CBD.
“I think even if you go out and check you will see that there is a significant reduction in congestion at those intersections,” Msipha said.
Bulawayo City Council corporate communications manager, Nesisa Mpofu, was not available for a comment at the time of going to print.
