WARD 4 villagers in Tsholotsho, Matabeleland North province, are constructing new toilets at Dibutibu Primary and Secondary schools after the old ones were condemned by the Health and Child Care ministry.
The developments were confirmed by Ward 4 councillor Gift Tshuma, who yesterday told Southern Eye that villagers had started moulding bricks for the construction of toilets.
“We have Dibutibu Primary and Secondary schools whose toilets were condemned by the environmental health technician,” he said.
“The secondary school was constructed in the early 1990s while the primary school was constructed before independence.
“The toilets are now dilapidated and new designs have been put in place.”
He said the construction of toilets was supposed to be completed in May, but was affected by lack of resources.

“We bought 100 bags of cement through a Campfire [Communal Areas Management Programme for Indigenous Resources] project and villagers have started brick moulding and digging of pits through a food for work programme for the secondary school toilets,” Tshuma added.
“Another school whose toilets were condemned is Mpindo Primary School run by the Methodist Church. We received reports about the bad state of the toilets.”
Tshuma said the schools fall under council, adding that the roof structure of one of the schools will need to be re-done before the start of the rainy season to avoid putting the lives of pupils in danger.
He further stated that roads have also become impassable saying transporters are now dropping villagers about 10km away from their homes.
