The Hwange Local Board's fire and rescue services department has stepped up efforts to raise awareness about fire to protect people and their properties.

Hwange fire officer, Mbuso Nkomo told Southern Eye on Sunday that it was important for communities to be sensitised about the dangers of fire and ways of dealing with them.

"We will soon embark on fire and disaster awareness campaigns whereby we will be conscientising members of the public about the dangers of fire and other calamities,” Nkomo said.

“It is also important to make sure that individuals know how to respond during a fire hazard.

“They should know the basic measures that should be undertaken when a fire breaks out. As a department we are there to impart them with the requisite knowledge."

Nkomo said the fire and disaster awareness campaigns will target schools as well as places frequented by people such as shopping centres.
