A SUSPECTED thief succumbed to injuries sustained after he was assaulted by members of a neighbourhood watch committee and residents in Bulawayo last week.
Acting provincial police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele identified the deceased as Lucky Ncube (23) of Nyamandlovu Fountain Village 1, Bulawayo.
Msebele said Ncube was caught by a neighbourhood watch committee team at around 2am on December 11 in Mahatshula North suburb in possession of a computer.
“The residents blew a whistle alerting other members of the community who gathered and started assaulting the now-deceased with knobkerries. He admitted to stealing the computer in Cowdray Park,’’ Msebele said.
The residents took the injured Ncube to the police, where he was detained.
His condition worsened in the morning and was taken to Mpilo Central Hospital, where he was admitted.

“On December 12, 2023, information was received to the effect that Ncube had passed on. The concerned members of the public are assisting the police with further investigations,” she said.
In an unrelated case, Msebele revealed that on December 17 at around midnight, Daniel Nkomo (29) of Pumula Old died after he was stabbed by an unknown suspect while drinking beer at a Sports Bar in Pumula South.
“She (sister to the deceased) then proceeded to the scene where she saw some people gathered surrounding Nkomo who was bleeding profusely. She hired a taxi, which ferried her brother to Mpilo Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival,” she said.
Police have since launched a manhunt for the suspect.
