PROPERTY worth $3 million was destroyed when a house in Old Magwegwe, Bulawayo, caught fire.
The fire accident occurred on Thursday last week and was confirmed by Magwegwe ward 18 residents chairperson Maritha Moyo yesterday.
“We had a fire incident at number 964/2 Old Magwegwe. The house was burnt on February 9 during the night. The family lit a candle and forgot to blow it off before sleeping causing a fire,” she said.
“The fire destroyed property and the family manage to survive the incident by a whisker as they were sleeping in the house. They were awakened by the smoke. There were no injuries besides the effect of the smoke.”
Bulawayo chief fire officer Lynos Phiri said when the fire brigade arrived at the house, the fire was already out.
“The Fire Brigade observed that the fire was concentrated in one room. Neighbours used buckets of water and sand to put out the fire,” he said.
