THE Air Zimbabwe (Private) Limited (AirZim) board has appointed Edmund Makona as chief executive officer (CEO) from November 1, 2023, at a time when the State entity is saddled with a huge debt.
The parastatal was placed under reconstruction in terms of the State-Indebted Insolvent Companies Act in 2018, for being technically insolvent.
“The Air Zimbabwe (Private) Limited board of directors is pleased to advise all stakeholders that Edmund Makona has been appointed as the CEO of the national airline with effect from November 1, 2023,” the AirZim board said in a statement yesterday.
“Mr Makona has been appointed in terms of section 14(4)(b) of the Public Entities Corporate Governance Act [Chapter 10:31] for an effective five-year term. At the time of his appointment, Makona was the acting chief executive officer.”
AirZim said the appointment was made because the board wanted to unlock Makona’s diverse expertise and vast experience to turn around the national carrier’s business fortunes.
“Mr Makona is a top-notch regional and international aviation expert and consultant with over 38 years of experience. He has been an aviation consultant with an aeronautical engineering background, a type-rated licensed aircraft engineer, an aviation quality, safety and security expert and a trainer for the aircraft engineers and pilots ground school,” AirZim said.
