Banket United Football Club board member Nqobile Magwizi has called for increased investment in sporting infrastructure to improve football status in the country.

Speaking during an end-of-year awards ceremony hosted by the Mashonaland West based club in Banket at the weekend, Magwizi said improved football infrastructure will also go a long way in dealing with the drug and substance abuse scourge.

"We are faced with the scourge of drug and substance abuse, especially among the youths," Magwizi said. "We have realized that sports is a viable vehicle to drive the youths out of this menace. That has been the motivation towards ensuring that Banket United survives."

Magwizi also emphasized the need for partnerships that identify and nurture talents.

"We need to seek partnerships that can help us develop our players and improve our facilities," he said.

The team's head coach Robert Mukombwe also called for investment in football infrastructure in the country.

"We need the community to invest in the pitches which we use, the allowances which we give our players, so that we can lure them to sports and drive them away from the scourge of drug and substance abuse."

Mukombwe also called for the improvement of footballers' welfare.
