Unlocking your ‘WHY’

Opinion & Analysis
Kadurira is an award-winning author, entrepreneur and speaker.

THE late Bahamian evangelist and ordained minister, professor, author, speaker and leadership consultant, Myles Monroe once said: “Everything is created for a purpose and where purpose is not known, abuse is inevitable.”

Now, the challenge is, does humanity understand her true purpose? What can we do to discover, develop and demonstrate our purpose?

Today I (JN) engage Ralph Kadurira (RK), who recently launched his latest book, Unlock your Why.

Kadurira is an award-winning author, entrepreneur and speaker.

JN: Is it easy to know your “Why” for life?

RK: Knowing your “Why” is really a challenging and introspective journey.

It is not easy, but it is possible.

It just requires some self-awareness, reflection and exploration of one’s life.

I can say with the right guidance and mindset, anyone can discover their purpose.

JN: What is the definition of “why”?

RK: The definition of your “Why” that I can give is that it is the underlying reason, the purpose that drives someone.

It is the answer to questions like “What gets me out of bed in the morning?” or “What makes my life meaningful?” Your “Why” is unique to you and serves as the foundation for your goals, values and decisions you make in your life.

JN: Give us processes for unlocking your Why

RK: I am glad you said process because, indeed, it is a process.

In this microwave generation where our culture now values quickness, instant foods, fast internet and the “grab and go” lifestyle, it is tempting to believe that success is immediate.

Process is ignored and shunned.

However, nothing meaningful comes instantly; purpose or your “Why” is a process.

Here is a guide for unlocking your “Why”:

Self-reflection: Ask yourself questions like “What am I passionate about?” or “What problems do I want to solve?”

  • Exploring your values and strengths
  • Identifying your long-term goals and aspirations
  • Seeking feedback from others
  • Practicing mindfulness and self-awareness

JN: How did you discover your “Why” Ralph?

RK: When I was a teenager, I discovered my "Why" through a combination of self-reflection, exploring my passions and seeking feedback from others.

At that very young age, seeing people even older than me coming to me for guidance and advice and  thereafter leaving with their faces charged and full of hope, it is then when I realised that my purpose is to help others unlock their potential and live a meaningful life.

JN: How do I develop, and demonstrate my “Why”?

RK: Developing and demonstrating your “Why” involves:

lClarifying your purpose and values

lSetting goals aligned with your “Why”

lTaking consistent action towards your goals

lSharing your “Why” with others through your words and actions

lEmbodying your “Why” in your daily life and decisions

JN: If I pick your book, can I be assured to know my potential, purpose and power?

RK: Yes definitely. I know, without a shadow of doubt, that the book will not only enlighten you, but will catapult you to your destiny.

The book provides guidance and tools to help you discover your potential, purpose and power as you have put it.

But to just put a disclaimer there; the journey of self-discovery requires effort and dedication.

If you read the book and you don’t put in the effort, then you will not see results.

However, when you get to apply the principles and processes outlined in the book, you will be well on your way to unlocking your “Why” and realising your full potential.

JN: At times we go through pain and failure that disturbs or redefines our purpose. What is your word of encouragement?

RK: In my book I say, “When your life is purpose-driven, setbacks and disappointments are regarded as commas and not full stops that punctuate your life story”.

When you are following your purpose and face challenges, know there is no resistance if you are not moving.

Therefore, keep going. Keep moving.
