Mafume said residents almost took to the streets amid reports that council had gobbled US$11 million on workshops in six months.

HARARE mayor Jacob Mafume yesterday accused some top council officials of looking confused, while appearing before the commission of inquiry investigating the local authority, saying they lacked crucial information on departments they lead.

He made the remarks, while addressing a full council meeting yesterday at Town House.

Mafume said residents almost took to the streets amid reports that council had gobbled US$11 million on workshops in six months.

“I received complaints from residents and stakeholders on money we had used on workshops. I cannot even go on X (formerly Twitter) and other social media platforms,” he said.

“There have been reports and, if I remember, word went out that we gobbled US$11 million on workshops and this comes from officials who are looking confused appearing at the commission of inquiry.

“I have made it clear and I am on record, you should have information on your fingertips. You can even ask a director here, he will say I will find out and this is why some will end up giving information which is not correct and looking confused.”

Embattled Harare town clerk Hosiah Chisango spilled the beans while appearing before the commission of inquiry.

Several officials at Town House have appeared before the commission revealing scathing details of financial mismanagement at the local authority.
