The accident occurred a few kilometres from the Marondera tollgate.
National police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed the accident, saying the collision occurred a few kilometres from the Marondera tollgate when the Harare-bound commuter omnibus burst its tyre and encroached into the lane of the Passat.
“Five people, all female, died while eight others were injured including the driver of the Passat,” she said.
The injured passengers were taken to Parirenyatwa and Marondera hospitals.
Witnesses said all three female passengers in the Passat died on the spot, while the driver, identified as Tanyanyisa Marange, was injured.
“When we asked him (Marange) what had happened, he was still in shock and could not explain the circumstances,” a relative Stanley Madaga said.
