Lawrence Mwerenga (39), the Chitungwiza branch manager, of Tynwald, Harare, was not asked to plead when he appeared before magistrate Tendai Mahwe and was remanded to August 31 on $200 bail.

As part of his bail conditions, he was ordered to surrender his passport, report every Monday at CID fraud squads, reside at his given address and not to interfere with State witnesses.

According to the State, between December 2012 and April 2013, Mwerenga hatched a plan to defraud his employer and used the bank’s dormant accounts held at the Makoni branch to apply for loans. The State alleges Mwerenga manufactured fake payslips and letters of employment confirmations in the name of CITI Med Hospital and then completed loan application forms and forwarded them to FBC head office, where they were processed and granted.

The State further alleges Mwerenga took advantage of his position and withdrew all the money after forging signatures and FBC Bank started debiting money from account holders without their knowledge.

After investigations, the complainants reported the matter to the police, leading to Mwerenga’s arrest on February 8 and only $18 344 was recovered.

Sebastian Mutizirwa appeared for the State.
