Tembani Nyasha (30) of Romney Park in Bulawayo was not asked to plead to the charge of criminal abuse of duty as a public officer when he appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Evelyn Mashavakure on Friday.

He was remanded to September 6 on $60 bail.

Prosecutor, Nkathazo Dlodlo told the court that between July 9 and 11 this year, Nyasha, who is a revenue officer at Zimra, captured Pay as You Earn returns for January 2012 to June 2016 and for 2012 to 2015 income tax returns respectively in respect of a client, Siphathisiwe Portia Moyo outside the prescribed period as defined by Zimra procedures.

The State alleges that Nyasha abused his office by failing to disclose the anomaly and as a result, caused the State to suffer a loss of $16 290 in potential revenue for three years that the client was supposed to submit to the government.

The anomaly was discovered by senior Zimra officials, who reported the matter to the police, leading to his arrest.
