Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa) Matabeleland North catchment area manager, Chengeto Gozo, confirmed the development at the weekend, saying they were now conducting trial runs at the plant.

“So far so good, we are not yet operating at full throttle, but we have started doing test runs and we believe soon we will be pumping water,” he said.

Gozo could not be drawn into giving the exact date when they would start pumping purified water, but only noted that the delay was caused by leakages in some sections of the pipeline.

“Since we started our test runs, we realised that two of our lines are leaking in some sections and plans are underway to fix them. Once we are done with that, we will start operating at full throttle,” he said.

Over the past years, more than 60 000 residents in the Matabeleland North provincial capital relied on four boreholes.
