BULILIMA district administrator in Plumtree, Ethel Moyo, has lamented the lack of dams to harness enough water for irrigation, which she says has impoverished the district.

In an interview with Southern Eye on Wednesday on the sidelines of Independence Day celebrations held at Sikhathini High School in Bulilima East constituency, the DA said the district lies in a semi-arid zone with low rainfall activity.
“We need more dams, big ones, as the ones that are serving the three irrigation schemes available at the moment are small. We have got Somnene, Tshankwa and Moza irrigation scheme in ward 5, which is the biggest one out of the three. Very soon, we will be lobbying the government to assist us with the provision of more dams and boreholes,’’ Moyo said.
She said Agritex officers had assisted them in dry planting crops, but yields remained low.
Moyo spoke as the Plumtree business community donated material towards the independence celebrations and entertainment was provided by ZCC Tshankwa.
Sporting activities in the form of football and netball matches saw winning teams walking away with $50 each sponsored by the Bulilima Development Foundation.
The co-chairman of the foundation, Tjiyapo Velempini, said they would continue with sports development and management in the district.
