MORE than 10 000 households in Uzumba Maramba Pfungwe are benefiting from the UKAid-funded programme being spearheaded by Cafod and Caritas Harare.

The projects that include food security initiatives among others are set to curb malnutrition that is reportedly rampant in the community.
District development co-ordinator Samuel Chindunduma said the projects had changed the lives of the people in several marginalised communities.
“We are pleased with what Caritas Harare is doing in our district. So far it has improved livelihoods of our communities through its various projects,” he said.
Joyful Mujuru, Caritas Zimbabwe field officer said the projects would benefit 10 870 households from the 12 wards over three years.
“On food security aspects that is where we have the dams, irrigation schemes, livestock breeding projects, fruit trees and promotion of micro-nutrient-rich crops and related trainings,” Mujuru said.
“There is one piped water scheme that has been completed. This has enabled learners and teachers at Nyanzou School to have access to potable water. Waiting mothers used to fetch water for delivery. Now they only have to open a tap.”

Mujuru added: “In terms of livestock breeding, we are seeing results on goat breeding. The project has created demand for micro-nutrient-rich crop varieties such as orange maize and sugar beans called Nua 45 and sweet violet.”
District Agritex head Isaac Zvirevo saluted the partners for such initiatives that have ensured food security in the area where thousands are facing starvation as a result of the drought.
