Mhlothshwa was unanimously elected during last week’s full council meeting.

Her deputy Brighton Mhizha (Ward 4), who was elected unopposed, was also installed at the function presided over by acting town clerk Webster Tembo.

The low-key swearing-in ceremony was attended by councillors and a handful of MDC-T supporters.

The elevation of the 36-year-old councillor to the helm of Chinhoyi Municipality followed last month’s expulsion of Claudius Nyamhondoro, alongside two other councillors by Local Government minister Ignatius Chombo.

Chombo fired the three councillors Nyamhondoro (Ward 8), his deputy Willie Nyambi (Ward 3) and Ward 6 councillor Owen Charuza over allegations of gross mismanagement of council affairs.

Busani Dube-Marumahoko had been acting mayor until the ascendency of Mhlotshwa.
