Police Superintendent Tinaye Mataki of the national traffic department said 579 accidents had been recorded so far.

“The highest number of 244 accidents was recorded in Harare Province,” he said.

“However, Matabeleland North, at 13, has the highest number of deaths in festive season accidents so far.”

Included in the statistics is Warriors legend Adam Ndlovu who died together with a female passenger Nomqhele Tshili in a fatal crash that left his brother, the iconic Peter, seriously injured near Victoria Falls.

Five people died on the spot and 42 others were injured when a bus belonging to Maphangisa Bus Services hit four pillars at the Shangani River bridge along the Nkayi-Gokwe road before plunging into the riverbed on Thursday last week.

Mataki said Bulawayo had recorded 82 accidents, Midlands (61), Matabeleland North (16), Matabeleland South (25), Masvingo (33), Manicaland (53), Mashonaland Central (11), Mashonaland East (26) and Mashonaland West (29).

Last year a total of 1 785 accidents were recorded during the festive season. The accidents left 147 people dead and 1 304 injured.

In 2010 65 people died and 818 were injured in 825 accidents. Again, Harare had the highest number of accidents, recording 346.
