This is a major step in raising standards in the local music industry by ensuring that artistes were equipped with business management skills.
The scholarship is worth $6 800 a year. This will enable McDee, who holds an Ordinary Level certificate, to pursue music as a business.
Zimbabwe’s local music industry continues to lag behind because of lack of professionalism.
“To get to the current international status, we saw it fit for our local musicians to get support from the professional industry, thus we chose McDee to be our first who will be taught the need as a producer to be able to administer his music production as a business as well,” the college’s vice-president of administration Tendai Tichafa said.
Tichafa said this would push the music industry to greater heights as the biggest challenge faced by local musicians was professional administration and such scholarships were a platform for them to learn more on music production.
“I have been in the industry for over six years now receiving awards and fame that are way below the financial achievement so it’s time to turn this industry into a business and stop the mourning,” McDee said.

He said it was high time musicians desisted from being mere entertainers, but also speak the same language with the corporate world.
“I decided to go straight into music from high school, but now I have realised that I need the education as it will make me understand the whole industry better,” he said. McDee said he was hoping that in a few years to come, parents would encourage their children to venture into the lucrative music industry.
