LEGENDARY musician Thomas “Mukanya” Mapfumo has decided to take his fans down memory lane through a collection of his hits titled Golden Classics to be released in the country on Friday.

The United States-based musician has not performed in Zimbabwe for nine years and the upcoming album is likely to remind his local fans of the good old days when he belted the hits at his exciting shows back home.
The new 19-track release will be distributed and marketed by Metro Studios.
Metro Studios director Emion Sibindi yesterday said work was at advanced stage to have the album in record bars and online by Friday.
“The guys in the production department are left with cosmetic touches before the release of the album,” Sibindi said.
“Core production stages are complete. I understand they are now working on album sleeves and packaging. Hopefully, they will be done by Friday.”
The album was compiled by Cuthbert Chiromo, who is responsible for managing Mukanya’s local affairs.

Through the musician’s Facebook fan page, Mukanya’s management encouraged fans to shun piracy and buy the original copies of the new album.
“To all true Chimurenga music fans, Golden Classics will hit the market on Friday October 25, 2013, in Zimbabwe and for the rest of the world,” the management noted in the post.
“True fans buy original CDs. Why don’t we give support to our own musicians through buying original CDs? We should not pretend to support our musicians yet we jeopardise their work by supporting piracy.
“We understand that Zimbabweans are facing financial challenges, but it is not fair when the same people that buy pirated CDs go for original regalia when it comes to supporting their favourite soccer teams.
“People brag that they have original ‘jerseys’ of their favourite teams, but the same does not apply to music. The music industry is suffering because of lack of support.”
Golden Classics carries hits like Nyoka Musango, Nhamo Yapera, Pamuromo Chete, Ndatomutswa Nengoma and Bhabhalazi.
The new album is likely to rekindle Mukanya’s connection with his local fans.
The fans continue to wait for the highly-anticipated return of the legendary musician.
Famous businesspeople and politicians have tried in vain to bring Mukanya for a performance in Zimbabwe to no avail.
Last year, it was rumoured he would perform in Harare in December, while some sections of the media claimed he would have a joint performance with Oliver Mtukudzi last July after the duo’s History Tour in the United Kingdom in March.
The imagined home tours have not materialised as Mukanya remains in exile. He last performed in the country in February 2004 and his performances closest home thereafter have been in South Africa and Botswana.
