A ZIMUNYA man earned himself 20 years behind bars after he fatally struck a fellow villager on the head before shoving him into a 20-metre deep dry well following a misunderstanding at a drinking spree.

Luku Jasi, of Mwaamba village, Chief Zimunya, Mutare was on Wednesday convicted of murder with actual intend when he appeared before High Court judge Justice Charles Hungwe.
According to the State, Jasi was in the company of the deceased John Changana together with Samuel Rakabopa and Blessing Maganzo, who is also now late at the deceased’s homestead drinking the illicit Zed spirit on August 27 2011.
After taking one too many, Rakabopa left the three, who continued with their drinking spree until a misunderstanding arose between Changana and Jasi. Jasi took a log and struck Changana three times on the head and went on to drag him into a well before he and Maganzo took to their heels leaving the deceased for dead.
The deceased’s body was found on the same day by a fellow villager Marjory Razerera who had gone to look for the deceased at his residence as she wanted thatching grass from him.
After failing to locate him on numerous occasions, Razerera later checked into the well and saw the deceased’s body fallen headlong and reported the matter to other villagers.
Police attended the scene and, according to a post-mortem report produced in court, Changana had serious injuries.

These include a skull fracture, big laceration on the forehead and concluded that the deceased succumbed due to severe head injuries.
According to Rakabopa’s testimony, the accused came to his homestead charging after commissioning of the offence accusing his of selling him out as they had drank beer together in the morning before the incident.
