A HARARE woman was on Tuesday night detained together with her seven-year-old daughter at Waterfalls Police Station following her arrest on assault charges.

The woman, Gloria Nyamutitima, had allegedly assaulted her landlady over an undisclosed matter.
Her husband, Jossam Chimbalanga, yesterday alleged that he went to the police station to fetch his daughter on Tuesday evening, but was denied custody of the minor child with police officers saying she had been booked with her mother.
“Her mother had been called to the police station to answer to the assault allegations and she took our daughter along with her as there was no one to look after her at home. I went to the police station at around 8pm and the officers on duty refused to release her into my custody saying she had been booked with her mother,” Chimbalanga said.
However, national police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba disputed Chimbalanga’s claims, saying the girl had been brought to the police station by a neighbour who had found her alone at home.
“There is a woman, who assaulted her landlady and she was arrested. Her daughter was only brought to the police station by a concerned neighbour who found her alone at home at 7pm,” Charamba said.
The police spokesperson said the child was not detained in police cells.

“Both female cells at the station were full with men and the mother was detained in the charge office. The father only came to fetch the girl in the morning (Wednesday).”
