AN anticipated grand return to Harare after 18 years away turned out to be no more than a dream for South African Afro Pop artiste Daniel Ndibiseni Tshandu — popularly known as Dan Tshanda — who was forced to perform before a paltry crowd at Pamuzinda Ice and Fire on Saturday night.

The same venue, which was thronged by thousands of music fans who filled it to capacity a fortnight ago during musician Jah Prayzah’s show, was near-empty with a few “die-hard” fans standing in front of the stage.

Poor advertising prior to the show marred hopes for a massive concert, which came as a surprise package from Sekunjalo Promotions and Investments after an exhilarating show in Bulawayo last weekend.

While sound quality and stage presence were top-notch, the gig failed to meet expectations that promoters and the musical icon Tshanda had promised during the build up to the show.

The Dalom Music boss got the shock of his life when he started his performance after midnight in front of a crowd that could have been easily mistaken for a mere family gathering, but that did not stop him from putting up a well-polished act.

“I usually perform for huge crowds in different places, even in the UK, but today I will give you a good performance because you have come to watch me,” he pledged to the mature crowd.

He also promised that his next gig in Harare soon will be well-advertised.

Despite the show’s delayed start, the crowd remained patient and as soon as the programme began, Dalom Kids, who came after Montana, put up an act so good it sounded like it had been pre-recorded. Tshanda did not disappoint with his yesteryear hits which kept people on the dance floor right into the wee hours of Sunday morning.
