Zimbabwe Republic Police has often been accused of abusing power. Among recurring complaints have been allegations of brutality, 'confiscation' of produce from vendors that are sometimes unaccounted for, demanding illegal spot fines from motorists and often engaging in running battles with kombi drivers in the CBD that has led to loss of lives.

Recently, in a video that has gone viral on social media, the police were caught on camera beating up an unarmed handcuffed citizen. In the video, a policeman is heard calling a colleague saying: “Dube, Dube. . . O shamu yako yapera iyi. (Here, your whip is finished).”

The video, has sparked dialogue around the way police work in the country.
