The rehabilitation of the Gungwe Dam in Gwanda has gathered momentum with a prominent Bulawayo-based contractor J R Goddard undertaking feasibility studies at the water body.

Engineers from the J R Goddard visited the dam following an intervention by Gwanda South legislator Omphile Marupi following his election in the 2023 elections.

The dam was destroyed by Cyclone Eline in 2000.

Murupi  told Southern Eye on Sunday that feasibility studies were at an advanced stage with engineers checking what would be required for its rehabilitation.

“Assessment by engineers among them JR Goddard is at an advanced stage after they visited the dam for feasibility studies,” he said.

“It is almost 15 years after the dam was washed away by Cyclone Eline.”

Marupi said his election brought new developments such as the rehabilitation of dams and boreholes in the community to improve the water supply both for the residents and livestock.

“The expected cost of the dam rehabilitation programme would be approximately US$100 000 and it will serve about three wards with close to 3 000 livestock in the constituency,” he said.
