GOVERNMENT has admitted that funds that were meant for the construction of a police base in Gwabalanda, Bulawayo, have been diverted elsewhere.
Home Affairs minister Kazembe Kazembe recently told the National Assembly that funds meant for the project were diverted to address other community needs.
This was after Gwabalanda–Luveve legislator Decent Bajila asked Kazembe during the question and answer session in the National Assembly about delays in the construction of the police base, which falls under his constituency.
Kazembe said the construction of Gwabalanda police base was being spearheaded by the local legislator through the Constituency Development Fund.
“However, the construction could not progress since funding was later diverted to address other community issues. In an effort to address criminal activities in Gwabalanda and surrounding areas, the police established a full–fledged police station in Cowdray Park,” Kazembe said.
He said Gwabalanda residents could easily access Cowdray Park and Luveve police stations for services.
“May I also take this opportunity to highlight that the police will remain committed to partnering different stakeholders to improve access to police services to members of the public,” Kazembe said.
