Crime-hit Kariba district bans carrying of weapons

Kariba police boss Superintendent Denford Chirumiko.

KARIBA, Mar.28 (NewsDayLive) - Police in Kariba district have banned the carrying of weapons in public places following a surge in violent crimes.

The ban, which is effective from March 26, 2025, to June 27, 2025, comes as police in other areas have imposed similar prohibition orders following threats of mass protests next week.

"The communities are living in fear of crime as a result of threats posed by these marauding criminals," said Kariba police boss Superintendent Denford Chirumiko.

"As the regulating authority of Kariba district policing area, it is my duty to ensure that the public is protected and that peace and order are maintained."

The ban prohibits the carrying of weapons such as blank firearms, ammunition, catapults, machetes, axes, knobkerries, swords, knives, or daggers, as well as any traditional weapons. Anyone found carrying these weapons in public areas or public thoroughfares will be liable to a fine not exceeding level five or imprisonment for six months, or both.
