A HIGH Court judge has issued a provisional order stopping Chinese investor Shuntai Investments (Private) Limited from constructing a cement manufacturing plant close to a private school in Chegutu.
The private school, Bryden Country School Trust, dragged the Chinese investor to court seeking an interdict to stop the cement manufacturing project near its premises citing its negative impact on learning activities.
The school cited Shuntai Investments, Environmental Management Agency, Chegutu Rural District Council, Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development minister Anxious Masuka and Chegutu police as respondents.
Justice Regis Dembure on Tuesday issued a provisional order in favour of the school.
“Second respondent is hereby ordered and directed to furnish the applicant with a comprehensive report and the requested documents relating to the lime and cement factory project at Plot number 8, Eastbourne, Chegutu, within 10 days of this order. First respondent shall pay the cost of suit,” the provisional order read.
Shuntai Investments wants to embark on cement production in Chegutu, activities which are likely to affect the school's operations.
Authorities at Bryden Country School said they were excluded from the consultative processes, including the on-going environmental impact assessment.
The Bryden authorities expressed concern over potential dust, air, noise and water pollution, as well as increased traffic given the school’s proximity to the project site.

Cement dust is known to contain silica.
Silica is known to cause both short- and long-term health complications, including emphysema, silicosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and lung cancer.
Reports indicate that the area in which the Chinese company is implementing its project is reserved for educational purpose.
The Chinese company began construction work in January this year.
However, the school is opposed to the project due to its closeness to educational institution given the health hazards it poses to learners, let alone disturbance.
