Prison officer in court over inmate's dramatic escape

Local News
Donald Madzinga (39) was remanded in custody to March 26 for routine remand after being advised to approach the High Court for bail application.

HARARE,  Mar.24 (NewsDayLive)-A Zimbabwe Prisons Correctional Service officer appeared in court on Monday facing allegations of slipping a gun to an armed robbery suspect who immediately shot his way to freedom at the Harare Magistrates Court on Friday.

Donald Madzinga (39) was remanded in custody to March 26 for routine remand after being advised to approach the High Court for bail application.

Prosecutor Lancelot Mutsokoti alleged that sometime in March this year, Madzinga who is stationed at Harare Remand Prison assisted two inmates Tafadzwa Marondera and Luke Zinyengere to escape from lawful custody.

Soon after breaking free, Zinyerere hijacked a car parked in the courtyard and sped off, but his co-accused was immediately arrested.

The State alleged that Madzinga conspired with the said inmates and agreed that he would facilitate their escape in return for a  US$700 bribe.

One of the inmates' relatives, Tinotenda Zinyengere allegedly brought a revolver, handed it over to Madzinga who later handed it over to the inmates.

It is alleged that Madzinga gave his phone to  the  inmates to communicate with Zinyengere's relatives about their plan.

Zinyengere's relative managed to raise US$500,  which he gave to Madzinga as part payment.

On March 21 , 2025 when both inmates were at the Harare Magistrate Court, as per their plan, they took with them the firearm after concealing it in their pants.

After close of business at court, the inmates  escaped from lawful custody whilst being escorted into a prison truck.

Madzinga was later seen wearing Zinyengere's jacket, linking him to the alleged offence.
