Harare magistrate Learnmore Mapiye convicted Brandon Ncube of Kuwadzana 3 on charge of assault before acquitting him on a charge of theft of US$10 000.

A HARARE man has been convicted for assaulting his ex-wife after she allegedly refused to accept his Valentine’s Day gift.

He was fined US$150 for the offence. Harare magistrate Learnmore Mapiye convicted Brandon Ncube of Kuwadzana 3 on charge of assault before acquitting him on a charge of theft of US$10 000.

Prosecutor Faith Mukanhairi proved to the court that Rebecca Masunda, a 23-year-old self-employed woman from Kuwadzana 3, was at home on the evening of February 14 when Ncube arrived with a Valentine’s Day gift.

Masunda refused to accept Ncube’s gift since they were separated leading to a heated argument before the caccused assaulted her.

She reportedly sustained minor injuries and fled the house.

On the second charge, Ncube was being accused of stealing Masunda’s piggy bank containing US$10 000.

Mapiye, however, found him not guilty.

Masunda claimed that when she returned home, she discovered that her piggybank containing US$10 000 was missing.

Suspecting her ex-husband, she contacted him, and he allegedly admitted to taking the money.

She reported the matter to the police leading to his arrest.
