
BEITBRIDGE, Mar. 13 (Newsday Live) – A sex worker opened her door to shelter a potential client from the rains but regretted her gesture immediately after the man robbed her of cash and raped her at knifepoint.
Moses Mukonowenzou was jailed for an effective 15 years for rape and another eight years and six months for robbery of R200 and a mobile phone valued at R800.
He was pleaded not guilty before regional magistrate Charity Maphosa sitting at Beitbridge on Wednesday but was convicted.
Maphosa was unhappy with Mukonowenzou’s attitude.
"You did this because you believed that you thought that commercial sex workers did not have any rights," said Maphosa.
On a rainy night last January Mukonowenzou knocked at the complainant's home in the Two Rooms Section of Dulivhadzimu suburb in the border town.
He said he was a potential client and the complainant welcomed him into her room.
But, as soon as he entered the room, he strangled her, and held a knife to her throat to silence her.

He then took R200 and a mobile phone before raping the victim once.
He disappeared into the night.
Soon after the complainant informed her friend and they reported the matter to the police.
Mukonowenzou was identified as a prominent patron at a local bar and was promptly arrested.
