Military tanks cause panic in Harare

Local News
The heavy presence of military hardware in the capital comes at a time when there are deepening divisions within the ruling party, Zanu PF, with a section of war veterans calling on President Emmerson Mnangagwa to relinquish power over corruption and failed economic policies.

MORE than 20 military tanks rolled into Harare’s Borrowdale area Wednesday morning, causing panic among residents as they feared a repeat of the 2017 coup that ousted former President Robert Mugabe.

The heavy presence of military hardware in the capital comes at a time when there are deepening divisions within the ruling party, Zanu PF, with a section of war veterans calling on President Emmerson Mnangagwa to relinquish power over corruption and failed economic policies.

Government spin doctors have, however, ruled out the possibility of another coup saying the army was conducting its routine drills.

Information permanent secretary Ndavaningi Mangwana was the first to take to social media platforms, saying it's "nothing to be concerned about".

His sentiments were echoed by presidential spokesperson George Charamba who, through his X handle, dhonzamusoro007, stated: “Support your Zimbabwe Defence Force, ZDF, as it goes through the routine of ensuring all its battle systems are in tip-top state!!! #ZDF, KEEPING YOU SECURE AND DEFENDED.”
