POLICE have released the names of five of the seven people who died when a mine shaft collapsed at Botha Mine in Bindura at the weekend.
Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi identified the five as Leo Chapondama, a male adult of Maganyani Village, Masembura; Zolani Nyani (21), a male adult of Church Road, Chipadze; Samson Madyira (20), a male adult of Waerera Village, Masembura, Jacob Madyira Nongwe (34), a male adult of Waerera Village, Masembura, and Mathew Madyira (23), a male adult of Waerera Village Masembura, all from Bindura.
Nyathi said the other two victims were yet to be identified by their next of kin.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police warns the public against conducting mining activities at illegal shafts and disused mine sites as the current incessant rains have made the ground wet and prone to collapse and mine trappings,” he said in a statement late Monday.
