TIMB sets license renewal deadlines

THE Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB) has announced immediate changes to the application deadlines for “A” Class and contractors’ buying licenses in a move designed to enhance compliance and efficiency within the tobacco sector.

In a statement, the TIMB said  the revised deadline for renewing or applying for a new contractor’s buying license is March 31 each year.

Similarly, the deadline for the “A” Class buying license has been adjusted to October 31 annually.

“These changes aim to align with the Contractors Compliance Administration Framework, which all contractors must sign prior to obtaining their licenses,” the board said.

It further said the revisions to address critical challenges such as delayed input delivery and compliance issues that have historically disadvantaged farmers.

“By requiring contractors to obtain valid licenses before the June contracting season, TIMB aims to ensure that growers receive timely and adequate resources, thereby preventing exploitation through substandard inputs,” the board said.

A buying license permits contractors to acquire unprocessed tobacco directly from growers to whom they have provided support, such as inputs and financing, at licensed contract floors.

In contrast, the “A” Class buying license allows individuals or entities to buy self-funded unprocessed tobacco at licensed auction floors, free from prior contracts with growers.

TIMB emphasized the importance of holding valid licenses before the contracting season commences in June.

“This is crucial for ensuring timely distribution of inputs to growers and preventing their exploitation through substandard or overpriced resources.

“The revision of these deadlines addresses ongoing challenges such as delayed input delivery and non-compliance with minimum input package requirements, which have historically disadvantaged farmers. Adherence to these new deadlines will facilitate better planning and execution for all stakeholders involved.”

The TIMB said renewing or applying for an “A” Class buying license by the October deadline will enable buyers to secure necessary funding well in advance of the next marketing season.
