POLICE in Beitbridge are in hot pursuit of a cross-border trucker who abandoned his truck after being found in possession of 280 kilogrammes of dagga at the border post on Wednesday.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police and Customs officers made the discovery and we are now following up on the driver who abandoned ship after the discovery. He left his vehicle keys but we have since established his particulars through his shipping agents," said Beitbridge police boss Chief Superintendent Mesuli Ncube.
The Zimbabwe- bound truck carrying maize grain belongs to Bokwest Transport where the marijuana contraband was neatly sealed in cling wrap.
"We are following up," he said at the same time disclosing the arrest of another dagga smuggler intercepted after entering the country from South Africa through an illegal crossing point about 200 metres downstream of the main entry point.
Ncube said the accused is expected to appear in court soon.
