EUROPEAN Union (EU) ambassador to Zimbabwe, Jobst von Kirchmann, has lauded the Geo Pomona Waste Management Project as a model of sustainable development and innovation.
Speaking during a tour of the site yesterday, Von Kirchmann highlighted the facility’s role in addressing Harare’s waste management challenges while fostering environmental conservation.
He emphasised the importance of sustainable waste management in mitigating the effects of climate change and achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
The Geo Pomona Waste Management facility is a state-of-the-art project focused on converting waste into energy and other reusable materials.
Since its commissioning, the facility has transformed thousands of tonnes of waste, reducing the city’s reliance on landfills and contributing to clean urban spaces.
“This project demonstrates that with the right investment and innovation, waste can be transformed into a valuable resource. It is inspiring to see Zimbabwe taking bold steps in this direction,” Von Kirchmann said.
The project has not only addressed waste management concerns, but has also created jobs for hundreds of locals and introduced environmentally-friendly technologies to the region.
Geo Pomona Waste Management executive chairperson Dilesh Nguwaya said he was happy that the project was getting attention from across the globe.
