A new environmental project, the Zimbabwe Low Emission Coalition, has been launched with the aim of reducing the country's carbon emissions and transitioning to a low-carbon future.

The coalition, a partnership between public and private sector entities, will develop a comprehensive low-carbon emission reduction strategy and framework.

This framework will guide Zimbabwe's efforts to achieve its nationally determined contributions (NDCs) and other international climate commitments.

In an interview, Environ Roundtable chief executive Ivan Manyonga said the launch was a crucial step towards a sustainable future for Zimbabwe.

“The coalition will establish a low emission reduction strategy roadmap and framework through which Zimbabwe’s private and public sectors can accelerate the transition to a low carbon future for Zimbabwe.

“Most importantly this official launch is taking place during the eve of COP29 when the world is gathered in Baku, Azabaijan, showing commitment for the country to meet its nationally determined contributions (NDCs) pledge and other multilateral environment agreements.

“Furthermore, the coalition members will make commitments to the four lines of action which include, setting low emission targets, reporting on nationally determined contributions, decarbonising the value chain and advocating climate action.”

The Zimbabwe Low Emission Coalition was adopted and it comprised a board of trustees and a steering committee.

Greenova Environmental consultant Tawana Marongwe highlighted the importance of strong governance and clear deliverables.

“We are in the space of climate change and we want to put the governance framework for this coalition and also look at deliverables that we want to achieve.

“The idea is that Zimbabwe has set itself some low emissions targets, which we want to then as private sector support in terms of deliverables that can be achieved by private sector players, by NGOs, by government entities, and basically make the targets that we have set out as a country achievable.

“So this meeting that we had was to just put the framework and the governance and to also elect members who are going to be in the steering committee, members who are going to be in the body of trustees for this Zimbabwe Low Emissions Coalition.”
