THE Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) has roped in police to flush out fraudulently imported motor vehicles, especially in Harare.
Zimra wants police to assist in mounting roadblocks along major roads often used by owners of the red-flagged vehicles.
The exercise is running for three months - October to December.
“The purpose of the roadblocks is to enforce custom laws,” Zimra wrote to police , adding that patrols would also be conducted at selected elite shopping centres in the city.
Some of the targeted areas include Avondale shops, Belgravia shops, Arundel shops, Highlands shops and Sam Levy’s Village.
Proposed roadblocks would be along Borrowdale Road, Armadale Road , Kebab area, Churchil Road between Mnangagwa and Borrowdale roads.
The blitz comes at a time when there are increased reports of civil servants abusing government’s duty-free rebate facility to import cars for resale, prejudicing Treasury of millions of dollars in potential revenue.
Meanwhile, in a post on X, ZIMRA commissioner general Regina Chinamasa appealed to the public to “join ZIMRA in the fight against smuggling.”
