A NUMBER of Chinese mining companies operating in Zimbabwe have taken their corporate social responsibilities (CSR) to greater heights as they give back to communities through development in the communities they are operating in.
CSR is a business model that helps a company be socially accountable to itself, its stakeholders and the public.
Kamativi Mining Company (KMC) a subsidiary of Yahua group, which is located in the Matabeleland north province and mainly focuses on lithium mining is one of the firms that has committed to hunger eradication as part of its CSR efforts.
“On June 13th and 14th of this year KMC coordinated the provision of two trucks to transport 60 tonnes of relief food to the Kamativi community benefitting over 27 000 people” stated the company in their press release.
In the same month, KMC also refurbished a classroom block at Kamativi Primary School.
“Following intense repairs which took half a month to complete, the block, which houses 3 classrooms was successfully renovated and the pupils resumed normal lessons,” read their report.
Speaking at the handover ceremony of the classroom block a KMC representative Wang Yiyou said:
“KMC values and adheres to various corporate social responsibility programs by giving back to the society in which it operates in through active participation in community development and welfare.”

On July 31, KMC also had a handover ceremony of the renovated Kamativi Community Auditorium and has to date reportedly “channelled more than US$2 million towards various community development projects with positive impact on ordinary people’s lives.”
Zimbabwe Prospect Lithium Zimbabwe Limited (PLZ), another Chinese mining firm which is wholly acquired by Huayou Cobalt Industry -located in the Goromonzi district- took the same stance.
As of October this year, the company said, “PLZ has invested more than US$2 million in public welfare donations and various community development projects, including assisting government activities, water storage tanks, agricultural materials and other material donations, sharing achievements with the community and achieving common development.”
Meanwhile, Bikita Mining, which is owned by Sinomines Ltd of China, revealed that since the acquisition in January 2022, the company has done a lot of work in employment, infrastructure construction, community education, sports, health and other aspects of corporate social responsibility.
"(Bikita Mining) has made a series of initiatives to improve the living conditions of local communities, with a total amount of donations and assistance of about $3.45 million," they said in a statement.
Early this year the president Emmerson Mnangagwa urged mining companies to take on corporate social responsibilities and give back to the communities which they are operating in.
