Security guard denied bail over Mbare Musika fire

Local News
The fire that gutted Mbare Musika reduced many vendors' dreams to ashes

A MBARE Musika market place security guard facing allegations of negligently causing serious property damage during an inferno was yesterday denied bail.

Action Chakauya (35) appeared before Mbare magistrate Artwell Sanyatwa, who remanded him in custody to November 11.

The State alleges that on October 8, Chakauya set a fire at one of the main entrances to the Mbare Musika retail market close to the precast security wall outside the market to keep himself warm.

He was seen by other security guards who were also on duty with him inside the Mbare Musika Retail Market.

It is alleged that the fire went on to engulf the market place, destroying property worth US$5 million.

Janet Mlambo appeared for the State.
