SEVEN people were killed on the spot while nine others were injured when a Toyota Quantum vehicle with 15 passengers on board veered off the road and overturned before landing on its wheels.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the accident occurred Wednesday afternoon at the 5km peg along the Wedza-Mutiweshiri Road.
“As a result , five passengers died on spot, while two others died upon admission at St Mary’s Hospital in Wedza,” Nyathi said.
He identified the deceased as Evans Marerwa (37), a police officer stationed at Police General Headquarters, Liberty Marerwa (31), Mendy Marerwa (12), Panashe Marerwa (25), Yvonne Meki (26) and Ethel Mhena (1), all of Kuwadzana 5 in Harare, as well as Wirimai Munhuuripi (49) Norton.
Nyathi said the injured were admitted at St Mary’s Hospital.
Meanwhile, Nyathi said regarding the 2024 firearms amnesty, which began on September 1 and ended on September 30, 69 firearms were voluntarily surrendered to the police throughout the country.
“The police extend gratitude to the public for their cooperation during the amnesty period and encourage continued support in the police’s efforts to fight crime and ensure public safety,” Nyathi said.
“Members of the public are advised that a nationwide operation will soon be launched targeting individuals and companies possessing illegal firearms and ammunition.
