GOVERNMENT has condemned the shoddy rehabilitation works done on Lorraine Drive in Harare, and ordered the contractor, Fossil Contracting, to redo the project.
In a statement on Wednesday, , Fossil Contracting confirmed the developments saying the reconstruction of Lorraine Drive will commence on Monday next week and is expected to end in December.
"This serves to notify the public and stakeholders that Fossil Contracting will commence works on Lorraine Drive from 16 September 2024 to December 2024 as contracted by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development. Fossil Contracting apologises for the inconvenience caused during the construction of Lorraine Drive," read part of the statement.
Transport and Infrastructural Development secretary Joy Makumbe said the directive was issued following concern about the quality of materials used in the project.
"Fossil will begin the reconstruction process on 16 September 2024," said Makumbe.
The Zimbabwe National Organisation of Associations and Residents Trust (ZNOART) urged contractors to prioritise quality and deliver durable infrastructure that meets the needs of residents.
"We are urging all companies involved in public infrastructure projects to ensure they do not cut corners,” ZNOART chairperson Shalvar Chikomba said.
“Residents deserve roads that are built to last, and it is imperative that contractors deliver work of the highest quality. This project must benefit the community, not just temporarily, but for years to come.”
