A 45-YEAR-OLD man from Mutare has been slapped with a 20-year jail term for raping his 14-year-old step niece twice.

In a statement on Tuesday, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) said convict pounced on the teenager early June this year taking advantage of her mother’s temporary absence from home.

“After the incident, the minor went home and did not reveal what had happened. Similarly, on June 28 this year the accused person called the minor to his home again when her mother was absent. Upon her return to the residence, the complainant’s mother observed her minor child was absent from the premises.

“Upon enquiry, she found that the complainant was at the accused person’s homestead. She found the complainant hidden under the accused person’s bed,” the NPAZ has said.

At home, the minor revealed to her mother that she was subjected to unwanted sexual contact by the accused and she was detained overnight. “The accused person was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment on the first count. On the second count, he was found guilty of incest and was sentenced to 5 years imprisonment,” said the NPAZ.

He will serve an effective 20 years in prison.
