Bulawayo traffic cop up for abuse of office

A TRAFFIC police officer stationed in Bulawayo has been taken to court for alleged abuse of office after she allegedly solicited a bribe from a commuter omnibus driver.

The accused, Memory Sayi, allegedly committed the offence while on duty in the city centre on May 20 this year.

In a statement, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe alleged that on May 20 this year, the accused, accompanied by a colleague, apprehended Donald Muchemi who had dropped passengers at an undesignated point.

The duo reportedly escorted Muchemi to the police station where Sayi was ordered to escort him to the fines office. Along the way, Muchemi indicated that he was going to pay US$160, but Sayi allegedly coerced him to pay US$30 only.

After paying the alleged bribe, Muchemi alerted his employer and subsequently filed a police report.

When Sayi heard that she was being investigated, she allegedly receipted the US$30 and forged the complainant’s signature to conceal the crime.

Sayi was on Tuesday granted US$100 bail and remanded to next month.
