The court heard that the uncle then raped her once.

A GOKWE regional court yesterday sentenced a 12-year-old Grade 7 pupil to an effective 15 years in prison for raping his five-year-old niece.

Gokwe regional magistrate Musaiona Shortgame sentenced the boy, a pupil at Nyaradza Primary School, who cannot, however, be named for legal reasons.

The court heard that on February 12 this year in Mafa village, Chief Nemangwe, the niece was at home together with her uncle while her grandmother was attending a meeting at a nearby crèche.

The boy instructed the girl to come to the bedroom where he was and she complied and he told her to lie on the bed before instructing her to remove her inner garment.

The court heard that the uncle then raped her once.

The girl did not report the matter to her grandmother who, however, noticed that she was bleeding while she was bathing her.

The grandmother inquired and the girl narrated her ordeal before the matter was reported to the police, leading to the boy’s arrest.

The minor was referred to Gokwe District Hospital for medical examination and a medical report was produced in court as an exhibit.
