Worry as cases of violent crimes surge

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said police were investigating a case of murder which occurred at a house in the Danga Road of Zengeza 1, Chitungwiza.

THERE seems to be a surge in violent crimes across the country, with the police reporting various incidents of murder, assault, infanticide and armed robbery in the past few days.

In a police update on Wednesday, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said police were investigating a case of murder which occurred on Wednesday at around 6am at a house in the Danga Road of Zengeza 1, Chitungwiza.

The suspect, Simbarashe Machipisa (32), allegedly strangled and repeatedly banged the head of a male infant (2) against the floor, resulting in his death.

The suspect is an ex-boyfriend of the victim’s mother.

The incident occurred in the absence of the mother, who had gone to Zengeza 5 for a sleep over, leaving the victim and his two sisters aged 15 and 12 at home.

The suspect was apprehended by a mob, leading to his arrest.

Meanwhile, a yet to be identified man was found dead with a cut on the head at an open space near a church cemetery in St Mary’s, Chitungwiza, on Tuesday.

The victim was wearing a brown T-shirt, blue jean trousers, a brown leather belt and blue socks.

Nyathi said police were appealing for information which may assist in the investigation of a case of robbery which occurred at a church in Glen Norah A, Harare, on Tuesday.

He said four unknown suspects, armed with iron bars and wearing balaclavas, attacked a security guard and two family members living at the church cottage before stealing US$4 000 which was in a safe and a cellphone.

The suspects used explosives to blow the safe.

Also in Harare, police are appealing for information which may assist in the investigation of a case of infanticide in which the body of a newly-born baby boy was found in a plastic bag at an open space in Ridgeview, Belvedere, Harare, on Tuesday.

In Chipinge, police arrested a suspected mental patient, Richard Myambo (42), in connection with a case of murder which occurred in Zuzunye village, Gwenzi, on Monday.

Nyathi said Richard attacked his brother, Rambai Myambo (33), with unknown objects leading to his death after the victim had confronted him for assaulting his wife.

He said in Kadoma, police were appealing for information which may assist in the investigation of a case of murder in which Egnes Mandenge (53) was found dead on Monday with multiple wounds on the head and hands in a bushy area near a primary school in Ingezi, Kadoma.

In Masvingo, police arrested Syney Katerere (23) for the murder of his wife, Edith Samanyanga (18), who assaulted with switches all over the body on Sunday in Ganda village, Mazuru in Gutu leading to her death.

The victim had allegedly confessed to having extra-marital affairs with the suspect’s uncle.
